How do you shut of a magnet?

Im currently building a machine and I have a peice of copper that is bieng atracted to the magnet, but before it gets to it I need to shut off the magnet somehow.. Is there any possible way of doing this? Can i turn off the magnetic field so the copper isn't attracted?

Describe the magnet. Material, permanent, copper wound, configuration?

You can shut off an electromagnet.
A permanent magnet is permanent -- however it is posible
to shunt the magnetic force so it doesn't attract the
previously attracted object zny more ( at least not so strongly)

is there any way to make a electromagnet shut off or stop attracting without using any energy or electriciy, maybe use a trip wire or switch?

An electromagnet is OFF when no currect flows across it.

If you break the lead to a DC electromagnet you will have an interesting display of electricity.

Perhaps there's more than just copper in the copper wire, if no current is flowing and it is attracted to the magnet?
