Greetings all,

I would like to know if it exists some table or code that indicate how many welding passes are necessary during the manufacturing of butt weldings on a pipe through SMAW. I've read some posts and threads but have not clearly found this points.

Thanks in advance.

This is a bit like asking how long is a piece of string.
On a smaller pipe this can be done in a single pass. On a bigger pipe it may take 10 or 15 passes or more depending upon the size of the vee groove in the butted joint.

You are judged not by what you know, but by what you can do.

It depends on which code governs the welding. Most likely you need a welding procedure specification which will define the number of passes required as well as other variables in the procedure. Some welding procedure specifications are predefined and prequalified....others are not. Your conditions, which we don't know, will define what you need.

Answer : a piece of string is long the double of the half [thumbsup]

For a given weld, you can adjust the number of passes based on weld rod size, current used, etc., so even for a given procedure and base metal thickness, there may not be a definite answer.
