Hi all,

I would like to know, what type of method can be used to determine the characteristics of high purity material.

I want to determine the chemical ingredients of high purity aluminum.
Aluminum content is as high as 99.999.

For chemical composition use the ICP-OES method - Inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectroscopy

You may also consider AAS method to determine trace elements present.

Contact your material supplier and ask them for a copy of the material certification that the aluminum manufacturer has on file for this particular order of aluminum. The material certification should list the trace element content.

The MTR should also tell you how they did the analysis for each element.
For most elements you will be looking at 20ppm and less, for some you will need to be able to detect amounts of 10ppb. It will take four or five different analysis methods.

I am in doubt of usefullnes of OES method, since I need to look for the elements where they may exist in the material at ppm levels.

@Maui
They have sent us a ICP OES analysis of the material. But we have to justify the results in more certain way. I don't trust ICP OES method at this level of purity.

What is MTR ?

The ICP-OES is one of the best methods for detection of impurity levels in the ppm range. Another option you have is ICP-MS for even lower detection limits.

The material test report. There are reports from NASA on ultra-pure metals, you could see that they used.
I would second ICP-MS. Mass spec is an absolute technique since you are counting atoms.
