Is there something in options that I need to change to change the color of the models?. I put the "Edit Color" button on one of my main toolbars and it is grayed out, so is "realview". When I select a model and go to component properties, then select color I can pick a color but it doesn't show up.

Computer...
Geforce 8800GTX 768mb ram
2 gigs ram
Windows XP
Solidworks 2008 sp3.1
The program is not on software OpenGL.

The only way I can get the color of the model to be different than the default is to give it a material then it shows up as a darker gray.

If I were to guess, I'd say it's because you're using an unapproved graphics card.
Have you tried right clicking on the part name in the feature manager and selecting the 'appearances' button, or is that greyed out as well? If it is, I default to my original statement.

I was able to do the colors just fine with a nvidia 6800gt

In an individual part the appearances doesn't do anything, when I do it on the part in an assembly it changes its color.

That's what can happen with non-approved cards. Some work great, some not at all. Just luck of the draw. That's why they are not approved.
