Hi everyone,
there's something I'd like to ask you for.
I'm 23, come from Poland. I have graduated Mechanical Engineering at Lublin University of Technology (Poland) at Feb 2013. My major is Computer Aided Design of Machines. I want to get job in other country, take my girlfriend, and start prolly good life. Do you have any advices for me? Where I should looking for job? Could you tell me something about recruitment in your countries? Maybe you know any companies which looking for employee on positions of designer/constructor (I name it correct?) and could recommend any places? [ponder]
I have a lot of thanks, if anybody help me on start of adventure with work in other country [glasses]

My company hires interns from other countries. My advice would be to contact several large international companies and ask them if they have programs that would allow you to come to the country to work. Another option is to goto school in said country and get a job after graduation that would allow you to stay in country on work visa.

Thanks a lot for great advice! I do it ASAP. I need to go abroad, because in Poland, employers don't pay fair money for graduate technical studies or another. It's horrible, because 1 litr of fuel costs about 1,5 $, and rate per hour in work after my technical studies is about 3-5 $. That's not fair, as you see.

I'm looking for job in Western Europe, mainly in UK, Germany, France. Do you know any companies which have programs that would helps me to come to this country to work? I'm looking job abs designer or constructor CAD, mainly in Siemens NX, CATIA V5, Solid Edge.

I thought petrol at £1-32/lt was expensive but then a UK graduate in your position should be able to earn around £10/hour minimum, if you can get a job, so it does not look so bad. Catia experience seems to be in short supply but you would need to be able to demonstrate your ability which may be difficult as a new starter. You could try and get a position with an agency and work up from there.

I'm from belgium, and over here there's a shortage of engineers as well. UK or France might be a better place to start as the language is easier to learn, but you'll find easily enough a job over here. There 's also much polish workers (in construction) as well, but you might already know this. Good luck either way.
I might add, government jobs should be a good place to start, as they recruit much more on basis of graduation/diploma, as on base of experience.

--Catia experience seems to be in short supply but you would need to be able to demonstrate your ability which may be difficult as a new starter.

does that include only exp with catia (i.e. knowledge of the program) or actual design exp? or, is it possible with just the former?

also, srobeoosh, which languages do you speak? did you finish the 2nd bologna degree (masters) or the 1st (bachelors)?
and how much euros nett do you get in poland in the beginning/ after a couple of years?
(here in slovenia it's 700-800/ ~1200 or slightly better)

I think its a combination of both. It is surprising how different organizations, or even the same organization, use Catia in very different ways. However to answer your question I suppose it is both but with the emphasis on design rather than software. The best manufacturing site I work with is in Wroclaw. They are totally professional, committed to fulfilling their deliverables, produce high quality work and above all are easy to work with.
Anyway good luck and like in Belgium the UK has a lot of Poles, both recent arrivals and from the past.

I finished 1st (engineer degree), and I'm study on masters degree right now. Actually I have holiday, but if I get nice job, I'll take a pause on study, or I'll move on part-time study. In Poland, beginner designer earns very, very differently. It depend from kind and size of company, and (It's the worst!) kind of voivodeship. Really bad situation is in the East of Poland (called "Poland B"). Here I'm living. Better situation and sometimes prolly higher salary is on the West of Poland (called "Poland A"). On the West of Poland is Wroclaw and, like @DerbyLoco said, there is good situation and nice employment conditions. Average salary for beginner in CAD/CAM is about 500-700 euro, that's why I really want escape to normal country, where engineer has respect and decent life, because he studied for it many years. Except for Polish language, I use English.

As you all see, Polish are in many countries of Europe, because in Poland, after Soviet occupation we haven't decent conditions for work and live :(

If you're working on a masters degree, why not try to finish it at a US school?

If your goal is to cross the Atlantic, Canada is easier to gain entry.

the new euro (3y) and us (4y) bachelors are not directly comparable. the old one (4.5y in my country + thesis) is as good or possibly better (no minors or majors, only the default field of study = more knowledge, better specialisation).

Woooow, cross the Atlatic - it would be great, but probably not yet. Maybe in future, but right now, I'm looking for job in Western Europe. I started my first job today as operator of milling machine, but I did it necessarily, because wasn't another position. In my life I see myself as CAD 3D designer.

If anybody from you, will hear about intern, or work for graduate, please contact with me in this thread.

do you plan to take the masters in poland or the new country?
i am also somewhat interested in a similar move, although i don't know what would i do with the masters (i.e. work on it now or while at a new position).

loki3000, I sand many answer to work offers, and I see, that it sounds interesting in ears potential employers. Only one or two persons, was unsatisfied after they heard, that I haven't masters degree. At this moment i've got temporary job, which does not I bind my future, but I want to get some experience. And then it would be easier to find work which will make me satisfied.
From next October I'm going to continue my study, but probably I'll use first opportunity to leave for work in another country. Then I'll take interruption of study and start make a career :p
I think, that sometimes, even so-so position as engineer, could be better, than next and next and next semester on university. Hovever - the best way is combination of work and study, maybe in part-time, or individual mode of learning :)

there were no positions for 3d cad engineer? although if it's only for 3 months, it's usually the case that you don't get to work at positions like that.

you can use myigetit.com if you wish to learn catia. i recommend the 200eur program. the one below it is also good i think, the premium is not worth the money.

The place, where I work is company, which employs about 50 people, inter alia 3d/2d cad engineers, but CEO said, that every employee, which starts work in him company, should "walk through" all machine as operator.

The site looks nice, and I see, there are lessons dedicated for more CAD systems, than only Catia, and it enjoying me, because I prefer Siemens NX :) Thank you, very match!

Sounds like you have a very smart man for a CEO... understanding how the entire process works (by doing, not just hearing about) makes for a better designer.

I would suggest you try to get in a Leonardo Da Vinci internship:
It's something like Erasmus. The company doesn't have to pay you, and you get money from the European Union (up to 1000€/month I've been told).
You should check with your university.
Alternatively, use the Erasmus program, which can still fund up to 400€/month:
If you get it, use the 10 to 15 weeks (I think) to start learning the language of whatever country you go to, the program funds language programs. Probably Germany or UK is best for you, language wise.

Too bad you're not a construction engineer, as 80% of all construction workers in Western Europe are Polish :)
