how to get started with downhole tool design

I was just hired as a downhole tool designer. this is a golden oppportunity for me. but i really have no idea about this field. could anyone tell me how i can get started ASAP?
what kind of reference materials i need to buy and where to get them? also any standard design requirement for this field?
