I'm trying to create a sketch that references some planes. I want to be able have a point or end of a sketch segment be coincident with a reference plane that runs at an angle through the sketch. The relations manager does not allow me to do it. What can I do? Thanks

a 3D sketch will allow you to do this, both point on plane and line on plane

You could use 2 planes to create an axis at the intersection, and make your 2D sketch point coincident with the axis.

Also if you use planar surfaces instead of planes, you can do more things such as intersection curves, intersection split lines, etc.

yep, right with you. Referencing the plane was going to be the easiest way for me to complete the sketch. I was able to work around this problem as you suggested but I would think that this is a simple capability a powerful tool like SolidWorks would have.

BTW, I also realized something with reference points: you cannot reference a reference point in a sketch by selecting it and adding relations. You must first be "normal to" your sketch plane and then drag your sketch over to the reference point for it to create a relation. Go figure. Thanks for the quick tip response.

Or attach the plane to the sketch--cart before the horse in this case--by selecting the point, the sketch segment, then add plane Normal to Curve.

Reason trumps all. And awe trumps reason.

I have done this in 2D sketchs by selecting the plane in the tree then Ctrl selecting the point and adding the relation. Sometimes you can only slect things in the tree and not in the viewport.

Create a datum axis at intersection of planes (before the sketch, of course).

Personally, I prefer the 3D sketch.

Oh yeah, thanks TheTick. I hadn't thought of adding a datum axis at the intersection. That works perfectly, albeit one more step than I was looking for. I kept trying btcoutermash's solution and though it works in onther scenarios it didn't work here. Thanks all of you for the great tips.
