how to model this in using sheetmetal

I do not have 2005 yet, but in 2004, I would start by making the back vertical piece using the sheet metal tool. I would then use the miter flange tool to make the bottom horizontal piece. Specify a Start/End Offset and select Rectangular from the custom relief type with a relief ratio of your choice.

Have you done any of the tutorials that came with SolidWorks? If you haven't I highly suggest that you do, as the tutorials are great, and will help you get started on the path you are heading.

I don't use sheetmetal that often, but I usually build my part with square corners, and then insert bends. It inserts the cuts for me as well. Is this a good method to use when building sheetmetal parts, or is CBL's method better?

In this case I would build 3 extrusions. The far face, the middle span, and the near face. Then select the top face of the middle span, and click "Insert Bend" in the sheet metal toolbar. It adds both bends for me exactly as drawn in the picture.

I'm still using 2001+, so I am not aware of any improvements since.
 
Use CBL's method. It is most practical, best & most common.
Also check links to users sites. There are plenty of tips and good stuff. You can start with my home site and go to links. good luck

It all depends on how you need the part to behave in the future. In this case, I would extrude the profile of part, then cut away the areas that weren't needed, then insert Bends.

Well I have done the online tutorials that came with the software. But I still don't know how to create this simple flange. In Autodesk Inventor I simply start a sketch on the face and create any profile then extrude using the Face command. I cannot find an equivalent tool in SW. Maybe I have to change my approach a little.
 
A good start would be to do a mental dump of Inventor.
Also, create a sketch, then use extrude "base-flange tab" from the sheetmetal toolbar. From there you can create your bends, etc. Play with the different features to learn what they do. Find some parts in others web site and download, see how they are done.

The method CBL mentioned with the edge flange and Edit Flange Profile will work, but there is a trick.

When you do an edge flange, the sketch line that is on the edge can never be longer than the edge. You can tweak the sketch to accomidate this by including the reliefs in the sketch or something similar.
 
There's bound to be several ways that you could create this part.
