How To Pair The Shaft Of a Cryogenic Valve To a Motor

Hi guys

Have to replace a manual cryogenic valve with a motorized one, to better regulate the nitrogen liquid flow through a 3/4" steel pipe.

Using commercial cryogenic proportional valve is indeed too expansive.

The idea is then try to add a motor remotely controlled by Arduino.

Here's the valve, shown in a red box:

From the remote control point of view, I guess there are no problems - I know Arduino and its software to handle a motor (stepper or standard).

Unfortunately I have no experience with mechanical stuff, so I need some help to:

1) choose the proper motor (the smaller, the better) and its power supply
2) choose a proper mechanical coupling valve-shaft / motor
3) have limit switches for positions completely open / closed

I can use a torque wrench to measure the operating torque for the valve (that should be fairly low) if needed - otherwise I would have no idea how to dimensioning the engine power.

Could you kindly share some idea?
Any suggestions would be welcome!

I would be grateful, being inexperienced, even if you could show me some model suitable motor and other mechanical components required.
 
you cannot guess at motor size for this. either use your torque wrench and get the torque required or call the valve mfgr and ask them for it. I like to say I'm from Missouri, and thus would want to see it myself with a torque wrench too.
 
u didnt say if it is single turn, partial turn, or multiturn so we cant give any ideas on adding LS's. if single turn or less, then fairly easy to add tang gidget to chain to hit switches. IF multiturn gate valve, depends on number of turns; if small u might be able to get the chain sprocket sizes to allow single turn on the big pulley.

also people like JOrdan Controls make complete valve actuators complete with limit switches, any gearing required, motor of your choice, and controls. You might look at some of these designs for your own design ideas if buying complete is not in the cards.
