How to run NX from home?

Hello folks -

I was wondering if there is a simple/realistic/reliable way to access my NX4 data residing in TCe from home.

First a little background...

I have a very reliable 3 Mb DSL connection, and can connect to the company network via an SSL socket.

We have just deployed TCe 9.something, and our non-remote data resides on a server that is about 10 miles from my home.

In general, I would not be looking to work on large assy models - just want to be able to load a model/drawing file and putter a few hours per night when I get behind.

I'm thinking that rather than install TCe at home and connect to the live data vault, it might be better to export what I want to work on, bring it home on a flash card, then reimport it the next day.

Is there a safe/easy/reliable way to move data in and out of the vault? Is it unrealistic to expect to connect to the vault via a SSL connection on a 3 Mb line? Does NX automatically version any data that is exported/updated/imported?

Any suggestions or comments appreciated.

Disclaimer - I have used TCe for about 3 days now, so what I don't know about it would fill volumes.

Thanks for any help...

Options...

Connect to your work via a VNC or other remote login software.

Install NX at home and point your license variable to your work license server over VPN, and use Teamcenter Web to download the files and upload the files or you could export the data from teamcenter bring it home and work then import it again.

Non of these are the best options, latency will kill you. Physical distance to your work does not exactly mean a smaller bounce or less latency issues.

So if I took the export/import route, would TCe have any issues with bringing the part back in again? Our support guy says that you can't import anything that is already in the vault, but I would assume that NX would be smart enough to version it.

Keeping the NX license active over a DSL line should not be a problem. I did this in Wildfire all the time and it was a no-brainer.

Would I have to export all the data objects in the item's container?

Thanks again...

You can import the files when it exists through Teamcenter Web. In the old interface you had to enable this feature, not sure about the newer interface but probably similar.

If you are working on an assembly it gets more difficult, but if you have the naming rules set up correctly it shouldn't be too difficult.

definitely start with a single piece part. Teamcenter 2005 SR1 would make this easier with the 4 tier architecture.

No, our TeamCenter IS guy has asked me to hold off on any import/export until he can verify that NX has the naming conventions setup correctly. Apparently if it is not, you will have trouble importing the revised part.

Wow, that looks pretty slick. Of course I tried using Windows XP remote desktop an dit was just dreadful. A screen refresh took forever.

I DL'ed the trial remote graphics software from HP and it works, but it is pretty slow. I connect to the work network via a Secure Socket Layer, and it is a pretty slow connection to begin with.

But the software does perform as advertised. You can rotate the shaded solid image at perhapes 2 frames per sec. I reduced the graphics quality to 20 (out of 100) for faster rendering. ANything less than 20 and text becomes illegible.

Thanks for the pointer.

Dave-

I don't understand...what is "4 tier mode" with Teamcenter? I have really good refresh rate with Windows XP and remote desktop connection at home to my workstation at the office but NX2 will not show the graphics area of the screen. I am forced to switch over to a Dameware client (similar to the HP software mentioned above or a NetMeeting type application). Can you explain 4 tier mode to me? I would love to get this to work.

Thanks,
Andy

4 Tier mode is first available in Teamcenter 2005. It uses a web tier to communicate from the Teamcenter server to the client. CAD managers can use this web tier to communicate with . Basically it is a web server. NX 4.0.2.2 is the first version of NX to support this 4 Tier Manager mode.

The reason why your remote desktop won't show the graphics on the screen is probably due to high graphics demand NX requires and Remote Desktop just can't or won't support. There was a similar issue with NetMeeting and you had to turn your hardware accelleration all the way down (on your Windows O/S setting).

Also if you want Remote Desktop to work try true color setting (I think that is the setting).
