How to splice a monorail hoist track?

I am a chemical engineer looking for some guidance from a structural engineer. A project I'm currently working on involves hanging a 40' long S12x40.8 beam which will be used as the track for a 7½-ton trolley hoist. The beam will have to be installed in the existing building in two 20' sections and spliced. Can someone advise me as to how this splice should be made without interfering with the trolley movement? Is this something that any knowledgeable structural engineer can detail on a fabrication drawing or must the splice detail come from the hoist/trolley manufacturer?

Get with the original engineer - he/she should be able to help you out.

Also, check with trolley mfg - they may have some ideas.

This may be relatively easy or quite difficult depending on how and where the beam is hung. Seek expert help.

The detail should come from the trolley manufacturer. A structural engineer is necessary to determine if the overhead supports can handle the load.

Here is a typical method of making a splice.

A structural engineer with this experience can do this. Similar to bimr's detail, I have also seen a small piece of plate welded to the bottom flange of one of the monorail sections. The second section rests on this piece to help to assure that the bottom flanges align.

You can also look for rail joint splice plates if availble for the type of rail that you have. Rail joint splice plates are availble for railroad tracks.
