HPS 70W Costs

I am doing a project for a DOH and utilizing HPS 70W steel. My question is what price per lb. is HPS 70W steel versus Grade 50W? Also, are there any limitations to the length of HPS 70W steel? I am working with plates sizes up to 20"x 1" and 26" x 1 3/8". Thanks

Myint Lwin from the FHWA Resouce center presented a paper at a Steel Bridge Form in Denver about two years ago. He gave the following prices.

Material In-Place
Grade 50W $0.35-0.42 $1.00-1.25
HPS 70W TMCP $0.45-0.57 $1.15-1.45

From what I have seen in bids and other publications these were reasonable but steel is going up.

The most ecconomical design depends on your span length. In most cases using a 50W web and HPS 70W in the more highly loaded flanges will give you the best combination.

Consider contacting the National Steel Bridge Alliance. They will give you a preliminary design that is a great start.

Any information on what these steel grades would cost in Arizona?

Based on conversations from fabicators in North Carolina and Pennsylvania, HPS 70W steel averages between $1.10 - $1.20. Average delivery lengths are around 90' for one fabicator who priced it at $1.10 per lb. Both fabicators stated that they are hoping for a leveling off on prices over the summer.
