Hi ,

I am designing a connection for HSS and I beam. Since I am new in my career I am not sure what I should check for my calcs.
I was planning to weld 1/2" plate to the flanges of W 8x40 and connect another 1/2" plate with 4 bolts.
And weld the HSS 12x10x1/2" to the second plate which is going to be bolted to the first one.
My idea is to bear the I beam on HSS.
I would be glad, if I can get any input about this connection.

Thank you,

I'd recommend posting a sketch of your detail/situation. That will allow us to help you more effectively. I'm having a hard time visualizing your condition.

- this is definitely a beam-beam connection not a beam-column connection?

OP said:

- So the HSS beam is carrying the I beam? Does it bear on top of it? This makes it sound that way but the description you provided of your proposed detail makes it sound like a side connection.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

@KootK
Here is a sketch. There is a 9 kips of uplift on the I beam.
I need a little guidance about what I should check to engineer this connection.

Thank you so much!

I would suggest the OP get a structural engr involved in the design/concept of this conn......

Hi SAIL

As a structural engineer, do you have an idea of what I should check on this connection ?

As a Structural Engineer, i suggest that a Structural Engineer should be involved to look at the entire picture.
