HSS subjected to lateral and gravity load

Hello Everyone,
I am reltivily new engineer. I am trying to design an HSS tube to resiste windload and gravity load at the same time. Can I design the member for each load case speratily ?
then if it passes both it means its okay? I am trying to use the AISC code for my design. Any help and tips would be appricated.

See Chapter H in the AISC Specifications for provisions for combined forces occurring simultaneously. (I'm looking at 13th Edition - the black book)
 
No, this is considered a beam-column, a member which is subject to both significant axial loads along with bending moments. This must be designed so the member can resist both effects at the same time.

I'm in Canada and the main check for this would be S16-14 clause 13.8, The American code would have a similar design procedure.
 
Thank you guys for your answer. I found chapter H in the AISC that HSS Subjected to combined torsion,shear, flexure and axial force. Doesn't my case have flexure from the two loads ? one flexure from gravity and one from the wind ? I forgot to add this beam is a header, therefore I don't see any axial load from the jumbs. Am I correct ?

It's still combined forces. bending about both axes simultaneously. Eq. H1-1b would apply if you have no axial load on it.
 
Who knows whether or not you are correct? When you say a header, do you mean a lintel? What are the jumbs? I suggest you draw a picture showing the member and the applied loads.

You may have to do more than one design check based on the load combinations. Full gravity load and full wind load simultaneously is too conservative.
 
Lion, that depends on the source of your gravity load (also whether this is a service level wind load or strength level wind load). In fact for some cases (likely not for a header), full gravity and full wind might be unconservative.

NewEngineer -- it sounds like you should be taking this to your mentor to ask for help. There are a lot of variables at play.
