Thread mentions pole mounted fault indicators are common in Europe for 3 wire systems. Could these be applicable to a 115kV system in the US? We are in a low lightning area, so we do not use a guard wire.

Does anyone know what manufacturers to contact?

Thanks

I haven't heard of using fault indicators on transmission systems. Modern protection relays have fault locators built in which would do the job without hanging stuff on the lines.

Stevenal nailed it. We have transmission lines where we maintain the ROW fairly well, but there are several lengthy taps to rural municipalities. If we could identify when a fault was on a tap, the restoration time for everything else would be significantly improved.

For overhead lines one technic is to use travel wave fault locator. It can be used on tranmission lines of any voltage. The signal is taken from the CT. Each fault occuring on the line will generate a pulse that will travel in both directions. Providing that a locator is installed at both ends they will trigger at different time. The time difference will give the distance to the fault.
The accuracy is much better that what can be obtained with protection relays.
Best regards

I have seen such a product for distribution lines in a flyer name Utility Products Showcase. The subscription is free and it is a thin monthly magazine but if you want to read about nifty products it is a great resource. Their website is . They are oriented primarily around electrical utility products but every once in a while they showcase a water or natural gas application.

Thanks mc5w for the site. I haven't found the product yet, but I have signed up for a subscription.

I was just surfing on the net when I read your question. I donnot know too much how much we can tell about the manufacturers.
For distribution lines fault locator you can find the right products manufactured by Hathaway (now belonging to QUALITROL). There are two existing products, the TWS and the DSFL. The DSFL will be more appropriate for your apllication.
I am sure that you can find some supplier in the States

Close. E.O.Schweitzer I is the 'S' of S&C. E.O.Schweitzer II is eosmfg. E.O.Schweitzer III is SEL. E.O.Schweitzer IV is a mechanical engineer.

I thought I provided that link already. I believe the company has been incorporated into SEL.
