Hello everyone,

Is there any standard which establishes the minimim thickness of chromium plating on the steel rods of hydraulic cylinder? We are making a machine to be installed on sea side with supposed life of 25 years. The hydraulic cylinder rods commercially available are with 20 microns of chromium plating, someone told me that you should consider 1 micorn per year, so 20 is less in this case. But I dont find any references of standard or literature.

Chrome plating will always have micro cracks and defects. It is not suitable to prevent corrosion in seaside applications. The chrome plating itself will not wear but you will get pitting in the defect areas. The rod will need to be made from corrosion resistant material or an intermediate layer of nickel will need to be used.

Multi layers are used in better platting. Sometimes Cu, Mi, Cr. Sometimes I have seen alloys platted on.
In general making it thicker just results in more cracks.

But is there any standard which sets minimum limits? Or its an open path for designer to do as he likes?

Any standards are specific to a manufacturer or buyer.
You may be able to find military specification, but I don't know of them.
