hi all, i am having a problem understanding a basic concept, I have a length of pole on a hinged base in a horizontal position. the pole is approx 1m in the air. A pair of rams have the job of lifting the pole, they are pinned to the pole near the hinge and on to the floor on a base plate, so a triangle betweent the vertical, the horizontal pole and the rams at angle x is created. HOw do i calculate the forces required to lift the pole from its horizontal position? thanks.

mg/sin(x) or mg/cos(x)

can't tell from your description where x is exactly.

it depends much on the speed required to lift the pole:
horizontal beam is attached to ram
>decompose load of beam in its X and Y factor around its hinched point with the rams.
>find shear load in hinch pole with the wall
>find load on rams
repeat exercise for min,90deg and maximum angle
>define maximum pressure rams
>define hoist speed
>define kW hydraulic pump

Not clear as to where the rams sit.
Please upload a drawing to get the answer to a very simple problem. in statics (assuming low acceleration of the rod.
