Hydrogenation without agitation

Hello,

I am thinking of trying a hydrogenation with Raney Ni in a thin glass tube.
Is it worth the try, has anyone done it?

I am trying to avoid agitation for safety reasons in a lab, but would like to show the process to students.

Thank you,
Dan.

Hi,
Are you sure you want to perform this try? Pyrophoric material.
I'm aware of fatalities with this process.

Thank you for your view, I am trying to take any precaution I can think of, this is why I am asking.

So do you think hydrogenation will happen without agitation?

To get acceptable reaction you would need fine particles, and then the reaction might be very fast.

And, without agitation, it will "hot spot".

Good Luck,

Thank you for your input. So it will happen. Good. I will get back to confirm it did.

Be careful you may accidentally discover the gunpowder.

I decided not to give details to anyone willing to try. It did go well but it is a good thing to add some layers of extra protection. Maybe two layers of plexiglass in case it doesn't go well for someone else wanting to see the reaction.
