Hello,

I was wondering if people could share their advice on how to approach drainage studies for urban type projects.

I live in Southern California and I'm currently working on urban developments (commercial, parks, shopping centers, etc). I have read our local agency's drainage manual and I feel that their examples are geared towards large watersheds as opposed to smaller urban developments. Single-family subdivisions are rare in this region and most of our engineering work invloves redevelopment of downtown buildings or expansions of existing shopping centers.

I appreciate any advice on how to implement the drainage steps to urban projects.

Thanks in advance.

for a redevelopment project, you will be typically reviewing, expanding and updating existing drainage reports and existing drainage facilities. Existing drainage infrastructure is probably already in place. So you will be checking to see if it is sufficient to handle the re-development. It can be difficult / expensive to expand the existing drainage outfall facilities so this may not be a viable option. See if you can get some existing reports on similar projects from the city to review.

Thank you. I appreciate the information and help.
