I got the "Unhandled Error", will upgrading to 2004 solve this debacle

Hey all

Im back again with another question, only this is a much bigger crisis.

I am working on a part which is essentially a master model. It has lots of curves and surfaces, so its pretty complex.

Anyhow, this morning my computer locks up with SW running. Instead of hitting CTL+ALT+DEL, I just flick the reset button.
After my computer reboots, I open this part up again. 10 seconds after the part opens, SW crashes, and then I get the "Unhandled Error" contact your tech support box of death.

Sometimes when I open up the part, I get this little feather Icon right next to my mouse, then it crashes.
I can see the part on my screen, but only for 10 seconds.

I can open any other part, including the parts that are referencing this master model.

I am running 2003, service pack 0 I believe (my company has been cheap in the past and not ordered any service& maintnece).

So I am pushing to get 2004 in the door very soon, do you think this will solve my problem with this "corrupt" file?

I have put in about a week or so with this part, and I would hate to have to start over.

Loading SW2004 will almost certainly NOT fix the corrupt part!
Hopefully you or or your system admin made a backup copy of your files. Check with him/her and also check Tools>Options>System Options>Backups to see if a backup was made and where it was saved to. If no backup was made then you are probably SOL.

I am having the same problem with 2004 sp2.1.
I am getting between 2 to 6 crashes a day with the "unhandled error " message.
We think it is a printer driver issue , cause when we reboot I have sent the info to microshaft and the error report says it a driver issue. We have to wait for our I.T department to get back from her Honeymoon to get this fixed.
It seems to mainly occur when I am trying to render something(though not always).
My suggestion check all your drivers,including graphics card. update as necessary.
We have 2 comps that have 3D wildcat cards in them and they caused issues with 2003 so I,m going to suggest to our I.t lady that she checks this out as well.

Have you tried sending the file to your VAR? Even if you are not on maintenance with them you stand nothing to lose by trying. If they cannot open the part then it is likely a lost cause unless you can dig up a backup file. If they can open the file then there could be a problem between the file and your installation of SWX. It sounds strange, but it has happened to me before.

Maybe this will be an opportunity for you and your VAR to build the justification for the subscription service, which I highly recommend.

I only had 1 back-up of the corrupt part. It was saved 7 minutes beforehand, and it was 200 kilobytes smaller. But unforunetly that file was also corrupt. (yeah, I am pretty close to being SOL on the FUBAR'd files)
Its unfortunate the back-up file number was only set to 1 =(, but I changed to now to 3.

Yeah I probably should check my graphics card driver to see if that is up to snuff, good sugg.

What or who is VAR?
I think my company is going to order the subscription service w/ our reseller, so we can get 2004 plus tech support. When we do that, then maybe I can send the corrupt file off to them and see what they can do.

I am really hopeful that everything will be alright in 2004. I mean the file stays open for 10 seconds..its like Im so close...ugh.

One thing I do that has saved me a couple times, create a SW Backup folder somewhere on a server. Set SolidWorks to create a backup every couple saves to that folder. If SW crashes, you still have the solids last save point.

A corrupt file usual turns up an error similiar to "Unknown error occured trying to open "X".sldprt - OK

Before you upgrade to SW04 you should test it to make sure it's going to work for you. "Don't leap over the edge without first looking... it could turn out to be deeper than you assumed?

VAR = Value added reseler. These are the folks from where you buy SW and that, hopefully, give you support.

I've alredy dealt with my VAR with file corruption, and they have sended the files to SW for debbug. SW could not recover the files but, at least, they could diagnose the causes. Surprise! It was some hardware incompatibility of VIA chipset, causing crap to be writen in a graphic portion of the file (can you imagine that?).

So this error can have many causes, starting in the temp folder like SBaugh suggested (we hope so!) and ending in a new hardware (like I did).

Meanwhile try some more tests like opening the file in a different system, cleaning the file with unfrag, zipping the file and oppen it within zip (surprised?... I was to but, in some cases it worked!).... I think that the upgrade to SW2004 will not solve the problem, but if you are getting short of solutions, why not try?

A wild gess: if macPT was told that there was crap in graphic portion of file then maybe unfrag and ecosqeeze would help also by removing all graphic stuff?

I don't know exactly what portion of the file SW was referring (they just mentioned that they found improper graphical data), but as these file compressors act on data structure, I guess that some corrupt data could eventually be removed when using them (I guess that there's the risk of the compress software also generate corrupt data, but the only complaint I ever heard was from myself,using zip, and the causes where also related to VIA chipset). So I just found that some compressed corrupted files could be openned by SW! But I think that the stranger thing was that the chipset could generate corrupted data on SW files (some bug like in the earlier Pentium processors?)! It was like being in a Twilight Zone episode.

Yeah since my company is looking to get 2004 and getting back on the subscription route, I guess I can send this file to the VAR and see what they can do.

Here are a few things that I have done to troubleshoot the file:

I quickly inserted the corrupt file into a blank assembly and hit SAVE. Right before it crashed, it was able to save the Assembly. And I am able to open up the Assembly as a Lightweight, and SW does not crash at all. But when I go to edit the part, SW crashes and I get the unhandled error message.

Also I am able to import the corrupt file into a blank part (via Insert>Part...>) and everything is fine, the part shows up and all, but ofcourse if I go to modify the imported part ('edit-in-context'), SW crashes.

Does anyone know a link as to where I can download Unfrag?
I did a google search and found a few download sites, but the links are dead for it.

I also cleared out the Temp files (from reading the FAQsheet SBaugh provided), but still no luck.

Oh, and I don't know if it is legal to do this, but are there any websites that have the 2003 Service Packs? I was able to log into my re-seller's website (since we have a valid SW 2003 reg code), but they didnt have jack for SP's.

That's because lightweight doesn't load the part. When you resolve the part it crashes, because it loads the part.

Again that's because your loading the part and it fails.

FYI - Unfrag does not work for SW04 files. You can try a different program that works for both 03 and 04. It's called EcoSqueeze. How ever do read this thread - thread559-87953

The reason they don't have jack, is because it is illegal for anyone to put the SW SP out for download. You have to go the SW website. If you know for sure that a SP fixes your problem. You are entitled to that SP through your VAR. Your VAR should have all the SP saved locally.

I just noticed something else while I am on my relentless pursuit of fixing this model...
I can now open-up the part and it will not crash on me...AS LONG AS I keep my mouse pointer hovering over the model tree. If I move the mouse pointer over the graphics area, it will crash. This is so very weird.
I was able to even create a datum plan (via clicking a datum in the model tree, then going up to Insert>Ref Geom>Datum Plane.
But of course when I went to modify the plane, SW crashed.

Ugh, ohwell. Now I am told that the company will be upgrading to SW2004 next Monday when we get it in.

That sounds like it's either a Graphics card or possible a driver issue or even a mouse driver problem. Try getting the latest drivers for both. You never did mention what video card driver you were using.

Yes it is a small world. I have never met Marie Planchard, she is very nice from what I have notice over email. I provided the Golf ball for their book and for some classroom activity. I have been trying to come up some other hits for the kids.
