I have a question about vacuum pressure differential ...so I have a pipe connected to a chamber with a thin beryllium window separating them and on the pipe side the vacuum is 1x10 - 4 torr and on the chamber the vacuum is 1x10 -7 torr . So I would calculate there is a difference of 1x10 -3 torr . If this is correct then how much force is pushing on that window if that window surface is 1" x 0.5" rectangle?

Why don't you say what you think and then ask if its correct.

Hint - work in consistent units then force = pressure x area is a good start point

Actually your PD is incorrect.

Its a pressure difference, so its 1 x10-4 - 1 x 10-7. pretty damn close to 1 x 10-4....

Think of it the other way around. If you had one side at 1 x 10^4 (10,000) one side and 1 x 10^7 (10,000,000)the other, the difference wouldn't be 1000 would it??

No school question..... it is only part of an issue I have pertaining to the direction of said window... I have a beryllium window that has a vac side and a atm side and if the vacuum pump fails on the vessel side I need to know if the window will hold and also I need to know the force during normal use.

Do you know how to calculate force if you know the net effective pressure (vacuum) and the applied area?

I think he means the glass has sides which are rated for vacuum and atm.
