IBC-06 & ACI 350-89

The 2006 IBC refers to ACI 318-05. ACI 318-05 refers to ACI 350 in section R1.1.4, footnote 1.3. Footnote 1.3, on page 409, states that ACI 350-89 is the edition to be used, not the subsequent versions. Is this an oversite. Does anyone know if the 1989 version of the ACI 350 is the version that should be used in accordance to IBC 2006.

From what I can tell, since the IBC does not reference ACI 350 in Chapter 35, then whatever 318-05 references would be the current standard. This is not unusual since codes are updated on different cycles.

There is a concept in the IBC, under alterative design methods, where you can use a future version of the code or referenced standard. The idea is, it will be adopted in the future anyway.

I have seen this used only when the future code relaxed a requirement (like A-2 occupancies in unlimited area buildings were not permitted in the 2003 IBC but permitted in the 2006 IBC). If the building official will not allow you use the future provision, you simply adjudicate it to the appeals board. I do not know a building or fire official that would not support a coming code provision not yet in effect.
