To add to the sound advice from Connectegr and JAE, you need the following references for the ICC S1exam:
1. IBC-2009
2. MPSI, and
3. AISC 13th Edition (14th will work too)

If you want to self study, consider purchasing Bob's workbook, "Structural Steel Inspector's Workbook" and just do exercises that pertain to bolting exam outline. In AISC that'll be primarily parts 1 and 16. In the IBC, chapter 17, and in the MPSI Section 2.

The exam is in 2 parts. The open book is a walk in the park. You do not need to know what a bolt looks like to pass the open book, seriously. As long as your books are tabbed, know how to use them, in addition to the AISC indexes, you'll be fine.

Plans are easy if you understand how to distinguish between moment and non-moment connections and how to locate and use connection schedules associated with them.
