I am not an NX driver, I mainly run Catia and Creo.
I was set a NX file and I am unable to open it.

Can someone tell me if there is a utility to identify what version of NX a file was saved with?

The file is newer than NX 12.0

There is a command line utility called ug_inspect which will provide the history of the file along with other data.

From the Start menu select the Siemens NX12 command prompt

enter ug_inspect and then the file you want information on. If you get errors like possible part corruption then it is most likely a newer version of NX (something above NX12)

I know for a fact it is newer than NX12, is there any way of identifying the version if its above 12?

I am not on Teamcenter.

Do you have NX installed ?
If you have, there is a utility in the ...\nx12\ugii\ug_inspect.exe
that will report the file version even if it's later than the NX12 ( I just tried it on a NX1980 ( NX1996) part file using the NX12 version of UG_Inspect)
start a command prompt
drag the ...\nx12\ugii\ug_inspect.exe into the cmd window, then drag drop the part file to the same window and "enter"
...\nx12\ugii\ug_inspect.exe filename.prt
it will report the version under part file summary
"Release Number 60 is unknown- ...."

then ... we need to match the number you get with the actual version, 60 is obviously the 1980/1996 i tested today.

Have you tried opening the NX file in notepad and searching for "NX"? On the files I tried it on it comes to a line that lists multiple NX versions, I assume the first one listed is the latest version it was saved in
Side note - same can be done with a catia file. search for "Last", "Min", etc to get CATSummaryInformation LastSaveVersion MinimalVersionToRead

Menu -> Information -> Part -> Part History -> OK -> click on "part save history report" to expand, the version will be in the right column

Notepad works, I've been doing it that way for years, for both NX and catia files.

all the versions it's been saved in are there, and yes the 1st one listed is the last version saved. Mine say 1973.4000.
