I am currently have a client who is looking to renovate and existing building. The project consists of a change in occupancy to the existing structure which will require the GC to gut the building. The existing structure is pretty old and construction is multiwythe brick bearing walls. Local jurisdiction requires the engineer to comply with Appendix A of the IBC for buildings with masonry walls when the aggregate work area > 50% of the building.

Since the building is unreinforced, IEBC section A106.3.3 requires the engineer to get testing done on the existing masonry walls. Testing can either be done in place or core samples can be taken to a lab for analysis. Has anyone ever performed these test on similar structures? Nobody from my office is familiar with this section of the code and some rough guidance would be appreciated.
