The thread thread238-167238 started to discuss the available IEC 61850 engineer tools.
These engineer tools are supposed to act as vendor-independent integrator tools, allowing the specification of the substation topology and its functionalities (SSD file), integrating IEDs ICD files, configuring the IEDs, programming the information exchange between them (GOOSE/MMS) and creating the system SCD file and the IEDs CID files.

Up to now, we found three software tools that are available on line (evaluation versions that could be downloaded):
- Visual SCL from ASE;
- SCL Manager from Kalkitech;
- Helinks STS from Helinks.

Other tools exist, such as:
- Siemens DIGSI, anb;
- ABB IET/CCT.

The question that remains is:
WHAT TOOLS WORKS !?!

We could not test DIGSI or IEC/CCT but the other three supposed solutions (VisualSCL, SCL Manager and Helinks) fail to do their jobs.

Please, tell us your comments and personal experience.

Hi Nick75,

Seems U know much about STRI. Do U know what they show in their IEC61850 hands on course? The next one is on march 3rd - 6th in Germany (Frankfurt). Look:

Are they showing how to engineer ABB and Siemens IEDs using this Helinks tool (...sounds much more clear to me, now!:)? Is it a tool of STRI? Are there demo versions available? Have you already worked with the tool? What about engineering Areva and SEL IEDs?

Tnx

STRI has tested the Helinks configuration tool for IEC 61850 engineering. There is a report on test for GOOSE subscription available at their web site:

Goose publication is not mentioned. This is somewhat harder as it requires a greater knowledge of the target IEDs structuring of elements in the Substation Configuration file (an XML file according to part 6 of IEC 61850). Work is ongoing here.

The Helinks tool is still under development and according to Helinks will support IED specific mapping of general Logical Node type to specific Logical Node instance naming used by various IED manufacturers. Together with intelligent communication setting Wizards this has the potential to free the user from the most detailed knowledge of a vendors IEC 61850 implementation.

The STRI course will configure IEC 61850 systems also with Siemens, ABB and Areva tools, in parallel to the use of third-party tools.
