just had a supplier tell me that they didn't carry a 3ph 20 kVA dry transformer (or it wasn't standard). anyone know where to go to get one, or would something else work?

Hammond transformers makes all kinds of custom dry type transformers and is very well known and reputable. I would give them a try.

I think hammondpowersolutions is the web site. Or you can call 1-519-822-2441.

Transformers are typically manufactured in standard sizes. For three-phase dry-type transformers, the standard sizes are 15 kVA and 30 kVA. I'd recommend finding a way to make one of those two sizes work. A larger transformer will always work, assuming you have room. But there will be virtually no size difference between a 15, 20, or 30 kVA transformer.

It's pretty easy to supply the 20. Just change the nameplate on a 30 and charge a big premium for the non-standard custom size.

I agree with dpc. Unless there are some strange circumstances, just go with a 30kVA, especially if the 20kVA is more expensive.

LOL stevenal, you aren't supposed to divulge the magicians secrets! Chances are if you ordered a "custom" 20kVA transformer, that is exactly what you would get.

I assume you guys are right....

but when we order a custom transformer, the weight and size changes....

must be a pretty good magic act...

Well then someone must be actually winding a custom transformer and making a custom core for you. It's possible that if a transformer mfr has already made something similar for someone else they already have the design and winding process set up. That seems unlikely for a one-off order that small Is it costing a lot?

Hi dap021

I work for a transformer company as transformer designer. We make transformers from .4VA to 50kVA single phase or three pahse.

Really there isn't a standard size transformer when it gets to that rating. Only thing is if you need one now and the only one you can get is a 30kVA then you will have to pay a 30kVA size because its ready to go. If you can wait a week or so then you should get and pay for what you need. If you need a 20kVA the size and weight will decrease and therefore the price.

Only thing is we are in Melbourne Australia (we do export transformers all over the world and they are all made to specified standards).

PS. Compare the price, weight, dimention and very important to ask for temperature rise because you can get a smaller and chepaer transformer somewhere but it operate very hot.
