Verified this as a real thread. It looks like an add/spam, but it's a legit article.

That's not just some crack, that's a full rupture... with internal corrosion too. Must have been exposed for a while.

That piece was probably just for shipping.

Well that's sure neat. I've never repaired a bridge where fatigue would be a grave concern. Does anyone know how one repairs this without inducing an incredible amount of local stress risers / concentrations? Or does anyone have any literature on such repairs?

I found the FHWA repair manual and have looked at it briefly. My cursory review didnt pull up anything quite like what we are looking at. But I am certainly going to go over it in more detail now that I have an actual repair to think about!

There's got to be some Youtube videos on how to fix this...

On a more serious note, just for some scale, about how big are the bolt heads shown in the photo?

That explains the lack of finger-pointers from the inspection company standing on the bridge showing the DOT just where the problem is. Though I think their caution was good, it might be extreme. It's been that way a while with heavy trucks going over in great numbers.

Other question - where did the loads go that this was to take? Did the additional flexibility elsewhere do more damage?

What a strange place to do that. You would think closer to the plate, or thru the plate.

Naw... it just looks bad.

Rather than think climate change and the corona virus as science, think of it as the wrath of God. Feel any better?

HSS members with bolted gusset plates. I wonder where the hand access hole is located.

Yet the infrastructure bill cant get passed. Next time you vote, just vote for the person NOT in office right now. Cant get any worse.

How unexpected:
“He didn’t see it,” Lorie Tudor, the department’s director, said at the news conference. “But the reason he didn’t see it is because he wasn’t following proper protocol.” The inspector was required to “literally go inch by inch along that beam and physically inspect every inch of the beam,” she said, adding, “That did not happen.”

Time to re-inspect everything that guy signed off. He was supposed to do this every year with an outside contractor also working on alternate years. That article says a review of 2019 video by that contractor was supposed to be reviewed by the inspector; it showed the crack then.

Also - gives a basis for how much the crack grew since 2019.

Don't worry y'all, there's a solution.

"To demonstrate the power of Flex Tape, we neglected this bridge in half!"
