can somone please clarify about the impact energy values mentioned in ug-84 (Figure 84.1) . These average values are for longitudinal direction or transverse direction. ?

i have gone through ug-84 again but could not find any reference for test specimen direction . It just mention ASTM A370 which says "Test location and orientation should be addressed by the specification. If not specified, for wrought products, the test location shall be the same as that for the tensile specimen and the orientation shall be longitudinal with the notch perpendicular to the major surface of the product being tested.". Tensile test specimen are usually taken from four different places. can any one clarify ug-84 test specimen direction?

UG-84

(g) Weld Impact Testing
(1) The impact specimens shall be full-sized or the largest subsize Charpy V-notch specimens that can be obtained from the material to be tested. The specimens shall be oriented so that the notch is perpendicular to the surface of the material. Where the maximum obtainable Charpy specimen has a width along the notch less than 0.099 in. (2.5 mm), impact tests are not required.
(2) Each set of weld metal specimens shall be tested using specimens taken transverse to the weld axis with the notch in the weld metal. One face of the specimens shall be within 1 /16 in. (1.5 mm) of the surface of the material, except that the specimens may be located at any depth when the weld has been postweld heat treated.
