I am specifying a pair of stormwater pumps, 50'head @2,000gpm pumping stormwater from storage tank dikefields.

Some of the fields are not stoned, so the system picks up quite a lot of sediment and sand from erosion. This problem is slated to be corrected, but for now.... what would be a good choice for the pump impeller. Is bronze too soft?

Woud cast iron or ductile iron be more suitable?

Thanks

This is a common problem with impellers. There are some excellent coating available now to lessen the effects of "sandblasting".

Contact slurry pump manufacturers such as GIW - they offer "white iron" parts which are extremely abrasion resistant.
will get you there

The first thing you need to evaluate is the amount of sediment and sand that will be pumped as a percentage of the total flow and the size of the material, including anything larger than silt and sand.

This will decide the best materials of construction for the pump unit.

Pump construction could range from cast-iron thru to hard white iron or even rubber-lined depending on the nature of the entrained solids.

The more exotic the materials of construction the more expensive the pump will be.

You should also consider the pump type for this application.

We have used 316 stainless steel for our cast impellors for a while with great success, and are currently replacing all our remaining bronze implellors with SS. We work on 5 year periods before the pump is stripped down and rebuilt, but the performance with bronze has drastically decreased at this stage. The SS holds it performance levels in terms of head and flow, much better over a longer period of service.
