Hi there,

when you are designing basement structure, how much R (response modification factor) did you use (according to ASCE).?

Thanks all,

what i found in one of the recommendation, it says R=1, however this is his personal suggestion.
it seems that this R=1 is too much...to be designed elastic.

I think R=1 is justified, as the basement can't achieve the ductility as required for those above ground structures, also for the uncertain nature of the surrounding/confining soil medium.
