Imported materials used in Building Works

The Australian Steel Institute has published technical notes regarding the use of imported materials in structural works.

If the large majority of bolts are being sourced from oversee's, should the engineering community be specifying that all bolt should be independently tested before they can be accepted on site.

Similarly with imported ply being incorrectly graded.

My spec requires that all bolts conform to AS1252 and all test certificates must be issued by a NATA approved lab.

At what frequency do you have the bolts tested and is that what is required by natspec?

testing frequency is as per Appendix A of AS/NZS 1252, don't know what is required by natspec. I see no problems with the requirements of AS1252 with reqgard to batch sizes/testing, I just like to have a local NATA-accredited laboratory independently test and verify the samples to the relevant Australian Standard. Note if the batch fails the testing you have to double the number tested.

Wow, surely this is something that should be sorted out at importation stage. For example all imported cars need to be checked to australian standards.
