SAP2000 Users: I just started to use this software and I am wondering about the possibility to import drawing files from other source, let’s say Autocad, into SAP2000

if you are working on frame system.
1-adjust your units an coordinates on autocad
2-create layer for your lines.because when you export your shape on sap 2000 it will be important.
3-draw your shape only using line.
4-save your shape as a dxf file.
5-go to sap 2000 and file menu and go to import
6-you will see a list about what kind of drawing will import from autoced to sap 2000
answer all guestions and click ok.
you will see that all shape in autocad you can import in sap 2000.

I don't see any benefit to importing if all you can convert are lines. SAP2000 is a good drafting program for frame elements. What they really need is the capability to import 3D models. Once again there is no documentation on this topic. Thanks for your help Sukocek. If you know how to import shells or solids, that would be great. We've given up in this office. We model arch dams and its very very difficult in SAP unless its a constant radius.

To export shells from AutoCAD to SAP use the drawing command '3dface' to draw the shells in ur model in autocad and save all of them in one layer and while exprting the .DXF file choose that layer name in the line of SAP that asks the Shells

Good Luck

In fact there is a lack of compatibility
among SAP (I use VER 11) and AUTOCAD ( I use ver 2008) in what matters to 3d solid.
The entity the sap creates when exposting a solid element is recognized in dxf format in autocad as "polygon mesh".
This is an entity that is not possible (tought) to create in autocad....so....
I have a problem.
I need to build a cube, in granite, with a cylindrical hole to engange some kind of dowell....
Thanks for any help...
