Importing SolidWorks to Inventor 3

Does anyone know if it is possible to import a SW-part to Inventor AND make it editable in Inventor?
If so, how?

(I have tried with STEP format cf. previous threads regarding this subject, but all I get is a "Base1" solid that isnt editable)

My problem is that I have made a part in SolidWorks(SW) and now want to open it in Inventor, and make changes to it in Inventor, but all I get, when I open it in Inventor, is a "Base1" solid that isnt editable.

No parametric modeler opens with feature tree from another modeler. You need to download free Feature Recognition add-in from http:/labs.autodesk.com

SolidWorks can import Inventor and Pro/E files with features.

That is really the same thing as feature recognition.

If you really want to open a SW file into Inventor try using Fusion as with that you can do just about anything to the file. But you will not get a direct 1:1 feature tree with exact history in either program. SW does not really have a Direct Modelor like Inventor Fusion and its FREE!

Also feature recognition is free for any version of Inventor. Solidworks requires license upgrade.

Can you explain how that is different than running Feature Recognition? If I post an Inventor or Pro/E file can you return a SWx file complete with dimensioned/constrained sketches in the feature tree. In other words, the same feature tree I had in Inventor or Pro/E (and of course, without any additional horsing around)? Transparent translation?

1) It's built-in functionality.
2) It's not as good as FR. FR allows feature by feature recognition.

From the little I've seen, yes ... depending on the complexity of the features.

Ah, now I understand. Most people in the parmetric MCAD field would read the OP's original question as a question about transparent, identical feature tree translation. Just like most people in the MCAD world would refer to "backward compatiblity" as an older version being able to open a newer version file. I guess I need to be more specific in answering questions that weren't asked by the OP but might be of interest to others browsing the forum.

Why not just make the changes in SW?

You are always going to be limited to the basic features that are common to all programs. There would be too much work to develop a like for like translator free with the software. There are some companies around that have developed these apps but they are not cheap.
