I have been asked to monitor load induced pressure in a double acting cylinder using a pressure transducer or switch. This is intended to automate a process control or I would use a pressure gauge. I realize this is not as straightforward as load cells but I would like to use an existing cylinder if possible. Are there any companies that deal with this specifically?

There are tons of companies out there that make pressure transducers. Honeywell, Parker, I could go on for a while.... Besides all that, be sure to measure both sides of the piston (do a differential measurement) otherwise your load readings will be off. I'm dealing with problems now from a previous engineer who relied on readings from only one end of the cylinder (and the valves created back pressure; killing the blind end readings).
