The correct designation is 38MnVS6 (1.1303) according to DIN EN 10267. This grade is used as a precipitation hardening steel for hot forgings that are subsequently controlled cooled so that the as-forged ferrite-pearlite microstructure can replace conventional quenched and tempered martensitic products. It will also respond to quenching and tempering, so austenitize at 830-870 C, oil quench, temper somewhere between 550-660 C. Not sure of the exact tempering characteristics, as there will be a significant difference between hardness after 550 C and that at 660 C. Your steel supplier should be able to give you a narrower range for PC 8.8 (22-32 HRC).
