I am an exchanger thermal design engineer.
I wonder how to do design of stripping column.

This stripping column is for removing Nitric and Sulfuric acid from water.
From Top of stripping column, Pure water comes out.

This kind of equipment is normally designed with process simulation software such like Aspen?

Or Is there any simple software?

Thank you in advance.

NOTE : The water from top of stripping column should be pure without any acid!
and Reflux can be done for stripping column.

Is answering this question functionaly doing someones work assignment ?

Is this a question from a newbie student ?

Is the purpose of "eng-tips" to educate newbies assigned to work that they never have done before ?

..... I guess my really question is:

"Should eng-tips be a substitute for the non-existant engineering training programs of Companies today ?

I would like the opinion of others on this issue ...

Such columns are usually covered by firms who design and sell them for 50 or more years.

If you are just carryinig out simulation, you'll have to take classes from the software company you are using.

Dear Hacksaw,

I am developing a new process related to Anaerobic Digestion system.
This system needs Stripping column to remove Nitric & Sulfuric acid continuously.

The other equipment can be designed by myself.
The problem is to do performance design for Stripping Column.
Simulation is NOT required.
I will make Mass & Energy Balance sheet using excel.

I am sorry that I have no experience to do performance design of Stripping column.
If there is software to do stripping column design, I want to get purchase.

Nitric acid is thermally unstable, will easily decompose on heating to release NO2 and N2O4, which will go into water vapor overheads, so getting pure water overheads in a stripper column wont be possible I think.

What concentration is this dilute acid in both cases?

Dear georgeverghese

Very dilute solution of nitric & sulfuric acid (0.1~1%) comes into stripping column.
This solution is to concentrate by 30% as maximum.

If the solution need to concentrate more, some additional chemical is required to make solution stable.

Using a stripper column at this concentration will be energy intensive.
How about using an ion exchange resin meant for anion removal? This will remove the NO3- and SO4= ions and replace it it with Cl- ions.

If this feed liquid is solids laden, upstream particulate filtration will be required. Talk to an ion exchange resin supplier if interested.

Dear Georgeverghese

The Stripping column is essential for the new process of Anaerobic digestion.
The reactors of Anaerobic digestion need to be heat.
The latent & sensible heat of vapor from top of stripping column is to heat these reactors.

Ask the concept design company if they had considered ion exchange resins for this separation.

Dear Georgeverghses

I would like to mention another.

The strong inorganic acids such like Nitric and Sulfuric Acids have very unique Vapor pressure curves.
Thanks to this reason, Stripping column can make pure water vapor!

See the feature of Vapor curve of Nitric Acid.
