We are evaluating this API 5L PSL 2 Gr. 42 steel and whether we could use it in place of A500 Gr. B for pipes. A fabricator is telling use it is available and cheaper.

We compared the fy, fu, weldability, and will compare the Charpy V toughness. So far, there are no issues with it.

Also, there are at least two modern steel construction articles in which this steel grade (or a similar API 5L PSL 2) was used.

Does anyone have any insight into this steel?

API 5L line pipe is a carbon steel and is a common specification used offshore for pipes and also for tubular structural members.

I have worked on a number of projects where it proved easier to get than a circular hollow section and was substituted.

You might compare tolerances on wall thickness as another check. Seems like some codes treat pipe and tube differently because of that.

API 5L is used for high pressure pipelines. I believe you will find it has tighter tolerances and more rigorous testing requirements.
