This instron 1011 emitted a mechanical noise and now is stuck with this error:

shall I take apart to see and try to fix the mechanical part or could it be a board?

Call your service people.
These never good.
They might be able to talk you through some basic trouble shooting and narrow the problem down.

its no longer covered by the service, they are just offering a new one, don’t even bother to come see it

yes, it just says contact assistance...

I am just trying to see if it’s a mechanical issue or and electronic one

Time to contact the re-sellers. Some of them have likely either learned to repair this problem and/or can sell the parts necessary or sell a refurb unit.

Who does your routine maintenance and calibration? Call them.
Honestly this why I never like buying machines from the original mfg.
I would rather have an old frame that sturdy as hell and get it retrofitted with modern controls.
At least the guys that did that work would be willing to do future upgrades.

I have both the user and the service manual. just say to press a couple of keys combinations, just to reset. I opened the front door and hit a reset button. Same thing

With nothing to explain what inputs are part of the failed self-test and how they are tested and processed by the black box to declare pass or fail you are reduced to guessing.

If you are confident in your ability to make reasonable guesses and do some basic trouble-shooting then go ahead.

"If you are confident in your ability to make reasonable guesses and do some basic trouble-shooting then go ahead."

I'd go even further (unless Ed's suggestion of getting a local shop to help works) and say, since you have no other recourse, hacking into the thing has no real downside. But then, I'm also the guy who likes to repair the tungsten filaments on the sister company's helium leak tester, just because I like poking around inside fancy machines...

I have an Instron Model 1011 also and get the same error on start up: FAIL CNTRL PASS CPU DISP LOAD

I would like to get copies of whatever documentation you have. I will be glad to advise you when I have this problem resolved.
