just received this:

Oldder double-glazed windows seem particularly susceptible to that, but it's a film and not a 3D gel.

Yeah once aerogel is transparent and cheap it will probably become the de facto thing to go in windows. It insulates well not just because it is mostly gas, but because it is mainly gas that is trapped in pockets so no convection or mixing happens.

Because of the refractive properties and the numerous angled surfaces of a gel, improving the optical clarity may be a real problem. What makes it a great insulator, also improves the translucency of it.

It's like a tangle of ultrafine human white hair, which is actually transparent, but the refractive properties make it appear to be white.
