Hi fellow practitioners.

I would like to ask you for your advice. I graduated with a masters degree in 2019 and Started working with my current company as a junior structural engineer with a salary of 54k. Fastforward 4 years later, I am still a junior (getting my engineering permit soon) and I am at 75k. I should be getting a raise soon after I hold the title of engineer, I have never negociated my salary... how much should I ask for? is it time for me to look somwhere else?

Thank you.

Shows you as from Quebec, see if OIQ has a salary survey. 75k is pretty low but salaries are usually lower in Quebec.

I can't speak to working in Quebec directly. But I'd say that your salary is on par with people in similar scenarios here in MB.

Does the QC board not have a salary survey for you to compare against?

You can probably push to the 85k range.
Attached is the salary survey for Quebec from 2021, you can probably download a more recent one from their website, but I wouldn't expect much of a difference.

Why are you still a junior with 4 years experience in Quebec? OIQ program to becoming licensed is 2 years.

Other professional organisations likely have similar data. The data may not be representative of the real profession.

If you want to know your true market worth, apply for jobs at other companies and see what kind of offers you will get. That will likely be the best indication of your true market value.

How good are you at what you do? The more potential profit you can make for a company, the more value you have and the more you will be paid (in theory, anyway).

In many parts of the US at 4 years experience, I would anticipate the 58k to 65k range USD, which I believe is 78k to 87k Canadian dollars. Overall these are lower than they should be but fees haven't adjusted like the rest of the economy for inflation at least in the US as there is still a race to the bottom occurring.
