The IT guy at work has set up my home computer with UG NX3 so that I am able to work from home... (wife just had a baby)

I bought a copy of Windows XP Pro specifically so that I could achieve this task. I will be having files emailed home or I will go into the office to pick them up.

Anyhow...

For some reason, whenever I start up UG and try to open a file or create a New file, it gives me the Internal Error: Memory Access Violation. Then it freezes UG and I have to do an Alt + Ctrl + Del to exit the program.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem? The IT guy at work is baffled by it. Of course, he didn't test my computer after he installed it, he just had faith that it would work as he has done it for other people in the past... And just recently on a laptop in which it worked no problem.

I am very frustrated. I really want to be able to work from home. Know what I mean?

We'll need your hardware specs....what processor...how much memory...what graphics card?

Open up your task manager and goto the "Performance" tab. Under "Commit Charge" what is the "Limit" value?

Computer Specs:

Intel P4, 3.0 GHz
1 G RAM

Graphics Card:

Radeon 9550

(wife made sure it supported OpenGL because she uses 3D Studio Max which needs OpenGL to run and it runs fine)

Commit Charge Limit Value: 4019520 K

Go into your display properties....goto the "advanced" tab which can be found on the "settings" tab. From there under the "troubleshoot" tab turn the hardware acceleration all the way off. Then try to open your part or whatever. If it works with that acceleration turned off it is a problem with your graphics card/driver. Just FYI...I've never had good luck with ATI cards and UG.

Take care....

SUCCESS!

Thank you so much for your help! I never would have thought it was something so simple.

So, what's the deal with ATI cards and UG?

I've tried them several times since v16 and never had good experiences with them. You can try different drivers. Make sure you have the most recent ones from ATI first. If those don't work try the Omega drivers which you can get here:
Otherwise you'll have to get yourself an Nvidia..preferably something with 256mb of memory. A game card will work..something like the 6600. It's not gonna pack the punch of a card designed specifically for CAD but it will work and I think you can get them now for under $150. Maybe you can exchange that ATI?

Right now...with that acceleration turned off....you're not really using the card at all...it's running through the software driver so the performance is gonna suck.

No problem...take care...

Oh...another note of interest....Nvidia has outperformed ATI in OpenGL for as long as I can remember.

I'm running an Nvidia FX500 on an older 1ghz P3 machine, and for most things it works fine. Pricewatch.com finds them running $199 or so.

My new box is running an FX1400, much nicer, but also pricier.

Everything should be designed as simple as possible, but not simpler.

I have a Radeon 9800 pro that runs okay with UG and Pro/E. It doesn't match the Quadro4 980XGL or the FX3400's at work, but it does work.
In one case, I got better line resolution on the Radeon than with the 980XGL. the lines would merge together at work, but when I open the file at home, I had 2 lines.

"Wildfires are dangerous, hard to control, and economically catastrophic."
"Fixed in the next release" should replace "Product First" as the PTC slogan.

Hi,
I do think the problem is related to the Radeon processor. It SUPPORTS OpenGL but is NOT intended to perform ALL the OpenGl 1.1 libraries in hardware. Also take care because 3DStudio uses a particular set of OpenGl which is NOT standard (an heritage of the Heidi drivers), so you can't make any direct comparison between 3DS and UG.
I have an ATI that works perfectly well with UG NX2, and the rest of my config is almost identical to yours (except 2GB of RAM, but that doesn't matter except for the model size and complexity I can load). This card is a FireGL T2, an "old" one if you want, but it is extremely cheap for the "Pro" range, and I can asure you it does work VERY fine with UG.
Anyhow, take extreme care with the DRIVERS, as UG seems very sensitive to them...

Regards
