Hello all,

I have run into a problem that was originally on one workstation, but has somehow spread to another this past week. They are both running R14 on Windows NT4 SP6.

When style is set to big fonts (any big font), the internal mtext editor does not work. It comes up fine, but the text I am trying to edit does not appear in the editor. If I try to type anything, an error pops up (an AutoCAD error, not a Windows error) that says "There is not enough memory to complete this operation. Try closing other operations to free more memory." If I don't use big fonts it works fine, the text is there and I can edit it. The problem is there for new or existing mtext. I've gotten around it by using Wordpad instead of the internal editor, but these guys like the internal editor. The systems are both PIII 800MHz with 256MB of RAM. Reinstalling AutoCAD does not fix this.

jboucher50, have you resolved this issue on yours yet? Anybody else have any ideas? Thanks so much for any suggestions.

Dave

Dear Dgold;

I believe this is due to a corrupt or missing rich32.dll file on your system. Do a search on that file name on the internet and you will find more specific information on fixing your broken dll files. Let me know if you have any luck. I have freinds with similiar problems.

Regards Adrian

Dear Dave;

That file name is riched32.dll , sorry for the typo

Adrian

Thanks for the response. That's one of the things I had in mind to try, but the first time I tried it windows said the file was in use and I couldn't do anything to it. I guess if I boot into VGA mode I could do it (I'm not completely familiar with NT yet, getting there). Thanks again, and I'll let you know how it turns out.

Some time ago we had a problem with corrupted riched32.dll that caused the mtext editor to behave strangely. At the time it was traced to a virus (I think it was badtrans, but not sure) that had overwritten the .dll with its own version.

The error generated here is the exact same error generated when editing large blocks of text with a windows text editor, such as notepad. The error is generated because of the size of the buffer that will be needed to hold the data associated with the mtext entity. To test this, open a small file in notepad, then copy and paste blocks of the file into itself. You will note that after the file reaches it's "critical mass" around 64k that you will get an error "There is not enough memory for that operation, try closing other operations to free more memory" I would suspect that if you changed MTEXTED to something other than internal, you would probably see the error go away.

I tried a couple different versions of riched32.dll on Friday, neither worked. The file on the system is fine, or so it would seem. Other programs that make use of riched32.dll work fine. I'm going to see if notepad returns this error on these systems. I already set them up with Wordpad for now, but they would rather use the internal editor... I guess they're comfortable with it, some people don't adjust to change as well as others. :) Maybe they'll just have to deal with it. Thanks for all the replies, everyone. If there is any new information (or resolution) I will be sure to post it. Feel free to post any other suggestions, as I will check back from time to time. Perhaps I'll even hang around and help out here. Seems like a pretty good place.
