Just wanted to let people know that I just installed IE7 and afterwards NX4 wouldn't run. Got a 'Fatal Error' message. As soon as I uninstalled IE7, NX worked again fine. Anyone else had this problem?

Note that we (UGS employees) have just gotten (today) a notice to NOT install IE7 until we get a final go ahead from our systems support people. So I guess that tells you something.

NX uses quite a bit of Explorer functionality, for example on the first screen where it shows tips apparently uses explorer parts, and the pallet for help is explorer. Why they (UGS) decided to depend on a third party rendering engine that isn't packaged with the product is amazing.

They should have at least used a platform independent render engine, such as gecko that they can package with the product and have it work the same on all platforms.

Just my two cents.

Given that Microsoft have just made IE7 available for public download and most people with windows XP will get it automatically as part of their windows update, I would have thought UGS might have addressed this problem one way or another.

UGS isn't alone in using IE for their PDM browser in the CAD application.

Is the Tips page really using the browser or just display an html page?

UGS cannot be expected to address outside changes immediately. NX4 was released before IE7 Beta.

The tips page is just a simple html file but it needs some engine to render it.

IE7 will not be automatically installed on your machine. If you have your updates set to download and install they are overriding this behavior and just downloading it and some day in the future when they do this, you will get a message asking if you want to install IE7. It is defaulted on "No" in case you accidentally accept everything. So you will need to explicitly say "Yes" install IE7.

Thanks Ben. I accept that UGS can't be responsible for Microsoft's products but they are responsible for their own and to have such a reliance on an external product over which they have no control seems a bit foolish. I also use Pro/E and while it also relies on IE for certain browser functionality, if a compatible version of the browser is unavailable then the program still runs. The problem with NX is that the program won't even launch without IE.

Thanks Dave. I read something that said it would be updated automatically as part of windows update and it just made me think that UGS would be getting a hell of a lot of calls from customers when their software suddenly stops working.

it's the solution from the software bulletin:

PROBLEM:

Attempting to start NX 4 or NX 3 with IE V7.0 installed will display an
error:

Fatal Error
Fatal error detected unable to continue

The syslog file will have the entry:

......
......
Daylight Time
+++ Unhandled operating system exception: e06d7363
[ 1 ] 7C812A5B
(kernel32)
[ 2] 202B908A
(libsyss)
[ 3 ] (libsyss)
[ 4] 202B7AD8
......
......

REMEDY:

There are two two known workaround options:

1. Remove IE V7.0

To uninstall Internet Explorer 7 and restore Internet Explorer 6 when
using Windows XP or Windows Server 2003

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
3. Scroll down to Windows Internet Explorer 7, click it, and then
click Change/Remove.

If you cannot find Internet Explorer 7 in Add or Remove Programs,
click Start, click Run, type %windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe, and
then press ENTER.

Note: %windir% is the location of your Windows directory, which can
usually be found at C:\Windows. To do this, you need to
have "view hidden folders" enabled.

2. The workaround for this problem is to disable the background page by
commenting out UGII_BACKGROUND_URL in NX 4 or the NX 3
%UGII_BASE_DIR%\ugii\ugii_env.dat

FROM:

#
#if FILE ${UGII_BASE_DIR}\UGTIPS\${UGII_LANG}\background.html
# UGII_BACKGROUND_URL=${UGII_BASE_DIR}\UGTIPS\${UGII_LANG}\background.html
#else
# UGII_BACKGROUND_URL=${UGII_BASE_DIR}\UGII\HTML_FILES\background.html
#endif
#

TO:

#
#if FILE ${UGII_BASE_DIR}\UGTIPS\${UGII_LANG}\background.html
## UGII_BACKGROUND_URL=${UGII_BASE_DIR}\UGTIPS\${UGII_LANG}\background.html
#else
## UGII_BACKGROUND_URL=${UGII_BASE_DIR}\UGII\HTML_FILES\background.html
#endif
