Inventor 11 arrived on my desk 04/10/06 (one month ago). It is still sitting there because I keep waiting for reports of common folk who have been brave enough to install. Has anyone out there got anything to say about release 11, good or bad ? Or if I have missed the post please direct me.

Thx
DeSim

I'll I've heard is that you should wait for Service Pack 1. Just a little tip.

Using 11 now, for about 1 week, it's pretty much the same as 10, and is able to pull in the 10 files without much headache. They did improve the filleting capabilities, but it still lags behind SolidWorks imo. For me, Inventor 10 was occasionally crashing (although it would usually do so politely, and allow me to save & exit before fully augering in) when I had too many complex models and/or assemblies open, and then tried to create a drawing. Supposedly, this should happen less with I11, so I went ahead and installed the new version. I'll let you know if there are any major headaches in the next few weeks.

The biggest tooth-gnashing is coming from across the aisle, my colleague installed the new Vault version along with Inventor 11. The new Vault version doesn't support user-defined content center libraries in the same way as it did with Inventor 10, so he has no links to his content center files. A bit of a pain.

I never really use the Vault, so it was no big deal to me.

Thx guys, yup think I will wait. Especially for btrueblood being the adventurer he (or she?) is. I agree about the statement of Inventor lagging behind SW, way behind. Btrueblood I sure would like to hear of your adventures and of your colleague’s, if you get a chance in the next few weeks.

We loaded Inventor 11 this week and we wish that we would have waited. Any old assemblies that have position representations and multiple sheets will not open. We have to recreate them. We have had several instances that have caused Inventor to completly shut down with out warning.

If you have a drawing that you want to turn visibility off off some of the lines, you only get to pick a few and it will shut down.
Autodesk says that it is in the plans on a future update.

Wait for SP1, this is the first time that we did not waitand all we have is troubles.

Iceman I feel your pain.
You know each time I hear this I shake my head. When are the CAD companies going to be held accountable? Just think of all our lost hours due to companies like AutoDesk using customers as beta testers. This has been an ongoing issue for years. They will tell you that it is due to differing system configurations, but I’ve always used “approved” systems and still have the same problems. This applies to all CAD programs not just Inventor. I guess I was hoping it would be different this time :(

Argh. Just went back to some project files that had languished awhile. These assemblies used a lot of "Content center" parts (fasteners, fittings, pipes, steel sections, etc.) The new code barfs all over the old content center parts, demanding that I go through and pick the parts one by one from the "old version" files. Apparently, the new content center loads via the Vault, and so I will have to delve into that mess to get my files straightened out.

Sigh...

Large, complex parts & assemblies - some improvement, but I've still managed to drive it into the wall a few times.

Autodesk released SP1 to fix stability issues with Inventor. Apparently it was not as stable as they thought. I have had video card issues on a couple computers in our office. Anyone else with these issues?

Steve

No still waiting to hear they have most of the bugs out before installing

I've been using Inventor for a couple of years and my advice is this... sell all of your copies of Inventor on Ebay and get whatever you can for them. Even if you loose money selling it it will be worth the productivity losses you will avoid. Just get rid of it. It is a frustrating glitch ridden faulty and unreliable software. I keep thinking and hoping that Autodesk will improve and and fix it but they never do. The software can't even dimention the length of an arc in sketch mode... its a joke.

Go buy SolidWorks and forget Inventor ever existed.

I am currently in the process of upgrading my co-workers from SW2006 to Inventor 11, mostly due to our need for stable large assembly management. Having used Inventor since the beginning, and MDT for many years prior to that, I can tell you that Inventor will always have features that are years ahead of the competition, hence the larger installation base for IV around the world. It is a sophisticated, mature product, not easy to master in a year or two, unless you are willing to invest personal time. Find a good consultant to review your hardware requirements, and provide real-time training with work in progress. Our former SW users here are delighted to now finish a day's work with IV, with no hourly crashes to desktop !
