Does anybody here use Inventor for structural steel work, and if so how productive is it compared to AutoCAD.

Could Inventor be configured to model a structural steel project and then spit out the detailed beams and columns etc.

I am seriously thinking of getting a copy of Inventor and having a crack at it as I have developed add on's for AutoCAD and am familiar with C++ and VBA.

All comments positive/negative gladly accepted.

YES.

I am currently using Solidworks, and do structural steel work. I also know others doing the same thing with SW and Inventor. You don't see a lot of structural type work out there as it appears that most folks are doing molds, surfaces, or just stopping at assembly/customer drawings.

I have done welded and bolted structures. I have used sub-assemblies and individual piece detail drawings, along with any assembly drawings needed.

to echo detroitpickles... YES.

i'm currently helping a company that does pretty much nothing but structural steel work (from small garages to massive warehouses) implement inventor as their primary design system.

we're using a method that blends driving the model with a skeletal/master sketch and excel, and it's working great.

Hi Col.

I see that you are in Melbourne.
I am in Brisbane and may be in Melbourne for a few days later in the month, I would be interested in seeing what you have achieved.

Anyway here's my email steelstubs@optushome.com.au

Cheers
Peter.
