IP abbreviation 1

Dear All,

Would you please advise me what does IP refer to in an onshore pipeline drawing. It is noted that suppose two pipeline center to center distance is 4000 mm around a valvepit and after valve pit two pipeline became closer and center to center of them changes to 3000 mm. in the point that pipelines get close(with bends) , it has been noted IP1.
on the site i asked from contractor what does it mean and he had no answer! would you please help me that is "IP" acronym?

IP stands for "Intersection Point".

When you have a bend, it is difficult to decide where to place the co-ordinate on the bend, therefore the convention is to extend the two straight lines from the pipe either side of the bend and where they intersect (cross), this is the place where the surveyor can mark out a single fixed location.

Thus the IP will always be on the outside of the bend.

In your case this should actually be two IPs, one where the pipe bends towards the other and one where it goes straight again.

For a 1m difference like you describe I'm very surprised they called that an IP...

Normally you wouldn't bother and just show this on a drawing. Only if both pipelines then changed direction would you normally call it an IP, but as you show, sometimes people use abbreviations without knowing what they really mean.

In the USA you may also see "PI" for point of intersection and "PT" for point of tangency.
