IP Address on MicroLogix 1400

I am doing a small retrofit project where I have used a MicroLogix 1400 and will interface it with two PanelView 600C terminals. I have used the PanelView component terminals with MicroLogix processors in the past but this is my first time using it on Ethernet.

The ML1400 came defaulted using BOOTP for Ethernet addressing, I would like to change it to a static IP address, I have followed the procedure in the manual multiple times and have not been able to get the MicroLogix to take a static IP address. If I try to do it thru RSLogix500, I get an error that says "invalid parameter". When I try to use the LCD on the processor, I get thru the entire process but it still stays in a BOOTP mode with no static IP.

Nowhere in the manual or in the Knowledge base articles I can find on it mentions the "power cycle" requirement that pops up in both the LCD and in RSLogix. I have tried different operating modes, RUN, REMOTE, and Program, I have tried power cycling after making the change, even found a youtube video that showed making an IP address change but didn't show changing it from the default of BOOTP and setting it to static.

Anyone run into this? I ate quite a bit of time today, and of course my Rockwell TechConnect is only 8-5 Monday-Friday. I initially just need to get the local PanelView up and going, and will install the remote (with essentially the same programming) a bit later in the overall project.

Thanks, Mike L.

Hello,

I have changed the static IP here several times and not had any problem. I do recall the menu, when stepping though it appears to be in BOOTP mode but the address I set is correct after power cycles. I also recall there was another way to just view the configuration, not step through the section that allows changing the configuration, and it displayed static IP and the correct value. This was all done using the font panel buttons and display.

I wonder if you change it to static IP and enter an invalid IP address it defaults back to whatever mode/address it had before the change.

Just writing to say, it does work for me via the front panel.

Mark

After three different people at Rockwell today we finally got it figured out, I was trying to use the IP address that came in the PanelView Component, 169.254.101.30, and was just going to change to 30 to 35, figured it would work. Well for some reason Rockwell doesn't want that address used in the MicroLogix. Came up with a different address and updated both components and have been working fine ever since.

Funny that a panel supposedly designed to work with the Mirco series PLC's come out of the factory with an address that can't be used. Would be nice if at least the Knowledgebase articles would mention that.

Thanks for the reply, Mike L.

Its probably set that way so that if you inadvertently plug it into a network, then it doesn't interfere with other devices before you get to configure it.

I'd also be interested to see if it manages to flag an incorrect subnet / IP setting, though .35 does seem a little bit unusual that it doesn't work, at least at first glance.
