I'm reviewing the prescriptive masonry requirements of the IRC for the first time and I'm having trouble understanding the language in section R703.7.2.2. It seems to imply that I need to fasten the first rafter with (3) 5/8" x 5" lag screw at every stud. That seems like a lot of screws into the edge of a single stud.

I'd like to assume they meant that each rafter needs a minimum of three lag screws, but only one at each stud. The offending sentence in the code is "...minimum of three 5/8" diameter by 5" lag screws to every wood stud spacing." Any idea what the code writers really meant?

EngMike44,

I do not know what the code writers were thinking,
but in looking at Figure R703.7.2.2, (in the 2006
IRC), this Figure indicates only two fasteners of
the 2" x 6" wood members are fastened to the
vertical (wood) studs.

The language of the code section overrules the
graphics.

If you want an official opinion on this application
/code section, you may want to contact ICC to obtain
one. NOTE: There is a potential that you may get a
different opinion if you call ICC more than once.
(i.e. - different call, different person, different day)
