Has anyone seen software for modelling the laser cutting process? With a cursory search of the web, I see that research papers have been written over a number of years. Have any of these projects become something useable?

AFAIK there are no process modelling tools for laser cutting, I had a pretty good dig around the net and at my local university when I was trying to answer my CO2/RFI question.

Almost all the work on improving the process seems to be carried out through a process of trial and tweek usually by specialists at the machine tools supplier although an experienced setter operator often comes up with a few tweeks themselves.

And- how did you make out on your CO2 DC/RF quest?
did you buy a system, or what?

Apologies for the delayed response.

We bought a DC system and so far have been delighted with the machine. Although I can't prove that it is directly related to the resonator technology the machine seems to produce a very stable cut at the top limits of the resonator. The downside so far is the low power control doesn't seem as good as the RF machines I have previous experience with. This has only really been evident in switching between cutting and etching, initially we seem to get some excesive depth in the etch.

what cover gas do you use when etching?
if you are switching gases, make sure the head is purged- else you will start the etching with wrong gas (Oxy instead of N2?)
